Apologies to Charlie who sent me this a few weeks ago to post... but here is the good news at last and well done!
"After seeing one of my friends take place in the MCM 48 Hour Film
Race in May, I knew it was a challenge that I wanted to take up. MCM is a
convention I go too pretty much every year so it seemed like the
perfect place to start, plus the challenge was
sponsored by a shop in my home town. The MCM 48 Hour Film Race is quite new with the October
one being the second time the race had taken
place. Once signed up we had to wait
until we received the following information by
email:
Theme: Monsters
Title: The Hunted
Prop: A Toy Soldier (has to be picked up at some point)
Dialogue: You were meant to be watching him
The moment we received this information, on the 10th October, we
had 48 hours to make a film which included all of the above plus our own
sound. It was a stressful weekend; with lots of meetings about ideas,
planning, getting actors, writing the script,
special effects make-up, filming, editing, and sleeping. And even
though the entire time we were all doubting ourselves on whether it
would get done and processed in time, we managed to get the short film
uploaded to YouTube with 30 minutes to spare.
Unfortunately this wasn't truly the end of the stress; we then had
to wait a week to find out if we had made it into the top 10 or not.
However half way through the week a surprise popped up on the MCM Film
Race Facebook page, they informed us of the top
18 films and right at the top was our group "99 Problems But Spun Ain't
One". Just getting into the top 18 made us all proud, to make it that
far out of around 100 films actually almost made me cry.
We then of course had to wait for the top 10 to be released, now
this meant spending a Monday refreshing the Facebook page over and over
again waiting for the results. I left my computer for about 10 minutes
and came back to find some amazing information
staring me in the face, once again right at the top of the list for the
top 10 was "99 Problems But Spun Ain't One". None of us could quite
believe it, out of all the amazing films that were in the top 18 we had
made it to the top 10 and were about to have
our film played at a comic convention.
After another weeks wait for MCM to begin, it got to the Sunday and
there we were sat in a hall with all the other top 10 groups and random
people at the expo. They listed all the groups and of course we did
cheer for ourselves quite loudly, but also gave
the rest of the teams a good cheer as well. I think the most stressful
wait of all was when they were counting down the top 5 teams after the
videos had been shown, the whole time we were all just thinking that we
didn't make it into the top 5 and that we
were perfectly fine being in the top 10. And then they called out our
team name, we had beaten films that we thought were surely going to win,
and we had managed to grab 2nd place. It was definitely one of the most
surreal times of my life; we had to go up
and accept the prizes and the trophy, plus get pictures taken, and
answer questions.
It was actually a good experience overall, even though it was
incredibly stressful and probably not good for anyones health. We've
already decided to sign up for the May 48 Film Race under the name
"Don't Question, Just Watch", and have figured we are
going to be more prepared this year as we've already done it once and
hopefully come 1st this time."
