Video Graffiti with Soile Mottisenkangas

Great day with documentary maker and artist from Finland, Soile Mottisenkangas. Yuwei Lin kindly invited DFSA students to take part in the workshop event. Soile started by identifying the poetic, visual style of Nordic and Scandi film makers and talked about her own practice by showing excerpts from recent work Maria Eveliina - Following A Train Of Thought

Later Yuwei gave a presentation about graffiti art. The common theme seemed to be about how artists can use their creativity to subtly explore meaningful ideas of cultural and political importance. So how can film by used in a site specific location in a similar way as graffiti? Soile introduced us to some small, hand-held, battery powered projectors and the concept of a moving image that travels. Firstly we can think about how to juxtapose a projected image at a location to make meaning - we thought about the Bishop at the Bishop's Table Hotel and the Lion and Lamb in the passage in Farnham. These are important local landmarks that could be subverted in ways that make a visual inquiry into the history of the local area. The students were sent away over lunch to make 60 second videos on their mobile devices with several locations in mind, then these were bought back to the studio and tested on campus. See Soile's Twitter feed above. Later we went out but sadly weather was not on our side. We didn't make it into town but we had enough creative fun on campus to convince us that DFSA will be exploring this further.
