Selected Year 1 Outcomes

It's been a great start for the 2015/16 Year 1 students, who have recently exhibited their 'Reflections' photography project at UCA Farnham.  Here are just some of the final outcomes from that and previous projects from throughout this academic year...

"This series is based on my Father’s memories of my Grandfather. The items are evocative objects which belonged or has been passed onto my family by my Grandfather. The concept of embracing old personal objects was interesting, they remind us of their owner (reflection), where they come from (traces) and what were they meant for (meaning). These objects are traces of my Grandfather, who was and still is the gem of our family. My Grandfather was a well know doctor in his town, he also specialised in Herbalism. He cured many unwell people during his life time with herbal remedies, some where his own creation. My Father has a strong relationship with his Father’s mortar and pestle. In his free time he was my Grandfather’s assistant, he would help him make medicine and created them next to his Father with his guidance.

"It shows you the negative impact we can have on our planet and also shows us that however much we try and control what we leave behind, in terms of memories, when we die there is always a certain amount of negativity we leave through things like mass consumerism and mass wastage. Aesthetically I decided, after further tutorials and research, that my images would work with a lot of brash and bright colours along the lines of Richard Billingham and William Eggleston. I feel this would help bring out the harsh reality of the pictures and create more of an impact on the viewer."

"Looking into Aaron Siskind has allowed me to see decay in photographs in a different way. Siskind focuses right in on the decay, as oppose to other abandoned/decay photographers who photograph the scene as a whole. I will go back to shoot the car at the abandoned place soon, taking my knowledge of Siskind's photographs and his practices and implementing them in my work."

'Collected Clutter' Reflections series by Connor Albinson

"Through this series of five images I am reminiscing on the change of styles over the past years. The work was inspired by my grandparents home which is filled with mismatched decor dating back from the 70s till modern day. The pictures represent my grandparents through only a small amount of possessions and their choice of decoration, showing how possessions can be used to represent a person and give an insight into their life."

As part of the 'Image Factory module, first years were also set a time-art brief:

In this project you will create a twin screen video art work of one minute duration which may complete within the timespan or run as a repeatable loop. The theme of this individual project will be the exploration of the relationship between the human body and the digital world.

Here are just some of the final outcomes from this module...

"I want to show how much time people are spending using their devices everyday. How big influenced they have on us. Focusing on these things I am going to show how people are looking without them in same position. Representing how much they actually are wasting their own time."

- Artur Reinholds, DFSA first year

"When looking at Zolloc's work I really liked the consistency from piece to the next with this light color pallet and use of lights and shadows to create a very clean and minimal effect, this is something I wanted to try and replicate when rethinking how to present my mobile phones e.g using portrait orientation as most mobiles are portrait instead of wasting space with landscape."

- Preston Hartley, DFSA first year

"I wanted to explore how humans have created technologies that are now able to create things that never would have been possible to witness. I want to create a film that explores how man-made films and pieces of footage have caused conspiracy about whether they are real or not."

- Natalie Hodgins, DFSA first year

"My piece is meant to be an observation but also a comparison between the human body and the digital world, the computer. I did this through the use of Binary code on one side and DNA code on the other."

- Billie Williams DFSA first year
