DFSA seeking a Graduate Artist in Residence

The position requires a contribution to teaching support and provides an opportunity to interact with the student body as you provide a model of creative professional practice within the University. There is an expectation that you will be at the university at least two days a week: supporting students and continuing your practice by making use of our resources and studio space as available. The Artist in Residence post is an unpaid post. The support of students is exchanged for access to UCA facilities and equipment. 

On application you will need to state your aims within the residency eg.
1. To have experience as a freelance artist
2. Successful completion of a piece or multiple pieces of work as an independent artist
3. To support the cultural development of the course and School of Fine Art & Photography
4. To support specific teaching aims within the course programme

In return you will be asked to carry out work as agreed with the University for the Creative Arts. e.g.
1. Carry on with your own work
2. Plan exhibition visits
3. Give a talk on your own work and experiences on the course.
4. Work alongside students and help where needed sharing knowledge and experience.
5. Assist students to install exhibitions of work.

It is expected that the post will run from January – June 2018.

Careers & Professional Development Event

Between 25th and 27th October we hosted a three day event for second and third year students to identify their goals after graduation and enhance their skills for employability.

Presentations were provided by both our Creative Enterprise and Careers & Employability team on Personal Branding, Seven Steps To Starting Your Own Business, Copyright Law, Career Planning, Team Working and Networking for Digital Artists. A big thanks to Stephen Davies, Alison Branagan and Fiona Brooking Thomas for their exciting workshops.

On Thursday we were priviledged to have an inspirational talk from Dean Humphreys. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0401981/ Dean started working in the film industry in 1975 starting as a trainee/runner at Twickenham Film Studios. After 4 years he went into the mixing studio as a trainee and left after 3 years to work in Soho on TV documentaries and commercials. He has worked in over 20 countries on more than 250 movies, 100 documentaries and TV dramas. He has received 2 BAFTA nominations and received the César for Best Sound for 'The Pianist'. More recently he has worked on Taken 2 & 3. He says “There have been many technological changes in the past 40 years but the fundamental need to be able to tell a story remains constant. I hope to cover some of the prerequisites that you will need in order to make yourself employable - CV's, appearance, attitude, reliability, team-spiritedness etc.” He gave an inspirational talk pitched just right with a great blend of humour and seriousness and a real wake up call to the students regarding the importance of conducting themselves professionally. We appreciated the advice regarding ‘smile and suck it up’ as regards creative challenges and the importance of turning up on time (and even before time) along with the marvellous anecdotal stories about great names that Dean has worked alongside.

We also had a presentation from Allan Arthurs, Managing Director of Media Techniche Ltd, a local Farnham company specialising in aerial imaging. His interesting and informative talk was a great blend of personal journey, technical information and explanation of the regulatory and legal framework for working with aerial photography and video using the drone. He also underpinned what we inform all students regarding legal matters to be considered in film preproduction… particularly regarding risk assessment. He finished with a practical demonstration up on the cricket pitch in Farnham Park and this was a real treat for those that climbed the hill.

Curator of Video Strolls and filmmaker, Owen Davey, who came in to teach Yr 2 last week, has begun a Film of The Month collaboration with Caught By The River magazine which will serve as a valuable online resource for students interested in films about place, people and journeying.

Call for Submission: Cinedans Dance Film Competition

Cinedans Student Competition extended deadline: till the 1st of December 2016!

The Cinedans team invites students to submit their dance films to our Entry Call again! Cinedans is a platform for dance on screen and brings together a wide range of movement expressions on film and other media under the same roof. We are mapping the international field of dance film and new media and supporting the development of the genre. Modern dance, urban dance, found choreography, abstract movement sequences of forms & figures, animation, experimental: it is the movement that counts! We are curious to see the work of the new generation of dance film makers! Since 2015 Cinedans organizes the Student Competition. The interest and response has been enthusiastic! In the last couple of years we have received a highly diverse collection of films from all around the globe. So spread the news to everyone!

The best films will be selected and presented at our next festival in EYE Amsterdam in March 2017. The winner of the Cinedans Student Award will be announced by the jury right after the official screening. The winning film will be included in the Cinedans on Tour, traveling all over the world!

BFI Scholarships for China/Uk students

Applications open to study film, television or games in the UK or China as an overseas student

London, 20 January 2016: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has today opened applications for the BAFTA Scholarship Programme in China, a new initiative that supports UK-China cross-cultural exchange by enabling talented Chinese and British nationals to study film, television, or games as an international student in the UK or China respectively.

Chinese nationals can apply for up to £20,000 towards course fees at an industry-recognised UK institution, plus up to £10,000 for living expenses. British citizens can apply for up to £10,000 for a course in mainland China or Hong Kong, and up to £10,000 for living expenses. The scholarship recipients will also be mentored by industry professionals, and have free access to BAFTA events.

Call for submissions: Bloomberg New Contemporaries

Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2016 is open to individual artists or collaborative groups who meet the criteria specified below. Collaborative partnerships and group applications are eligible as long as at least one member of the group meets this criteria. Applicants must be:

• Undergraduates in the final year of a fine art degree at a UK college (graduating from a BA in 2016)
• Postgraduates currently enrolled on a degree (MA/PhD/PGDip/PGCert) in fine art at a UK college
• Those who graduated from either an Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree in fine art in the 2015 academic year

Creative England Film Funding - iShorts Round 3 Launched

iShorts is Creative England's entry level short film initiative targeted at new filmmakers in England (except Greater London).

Creative England is looking to identify new talented filmmakers by supporting the production of their original, engaging and distinctive short films across all genres. iShorts aims to help a diverse group of new talented people to take their first professional steps in the industry and kick-start their filmmaking careers.

Those who have some experience in self-funded short films, student films, or have written an unproduced screenplay, or produced work that has not yet attracted financial support from within the industry, may qualify for support through this entry level initiative.

This is a fixed call for submissions, financing around 15 films. The maximum amount iShorts can award per project is £5,000.

Selected filmmakers will also receive editorial support, industry mentoring and networking opportunities via the Creative England film team, as well as access to a bespoke training programme funded by Creative Skillset and support in crowdfunding additional production funds.

The proposed idea or story should aim to be between 5 and 15 minutes in length, and have 'something fresh, exciting and ambitious' to say to an audience. It can be a fiction or documentary, and use animation (if that works within budget).

The programme is open to applications by new filmmakers in England (excluding Greater London).

Applicants can be film directors or writers who:

  - have little or no professional experience as a filmmaker; or
  - have some track-record in self-funded films but whose work has yet to attract industry attention.

The deadline for iShorts 3 is 5pm on Monday 5 October 2015.

London Hippodrome Casino Launches National Moving Image Award for 2015

Brighton Digital Festival - a month long celebration of digital culture which just so happens to be managed by 2009 DFSA graduate Jesse Mooney - is now accepting submissions for its Digital Education Awards of up to £1000 per event.

The festival encourages proposals for events that compliment key learning initiatives, and explore
areas such as:

• Computing, robotics, electronics, and 3D printing

• Creative entrepreneurship, STEAM pedagogy, and start-up culture

• Architecture, urban planning and civic engagement

• Digital music, animation, games, and filmmaking

• Maker culture, DIY tech, and experimentation

The Festival is open to consider proposals that engage audiences of all ages, from schoolgoers
to lifelong learners. These awards can cover either total project costs, or part-fund
projects if additional funding has been confirmed.

 South Shorts is a new initiative looking to celebrate filmmaking and local talent in and around the South East coast.  

South Shorts Film Competition – running for the second year – seeks to encourage and support emerging, amateur and locally committed filmmakers by providing opportunities to showcase and promote their films. 

South Shorts accepts short films in all genres, up to 20-min long. The award categories include Cinematography, Innovation, Story and Acting. Awarded films are selected by a panel of film professionals and academics and win prizes.

Stephen Fry Project

Along with some Y1 and Y2 students I went to the presentation tonight by Penguin/Random House re the multi media project around Stephen Fry's autobiography More Fool Me.

It was interesting to hear how book publishers are now looking to work with artists on interdisciplinary content and to see some of their current projects. There seems to be extensive opportunities that could exist for our students and graduates to work in this field and DFSA students  have exactly the right skillbase to explore this developing field.

I would strongly urge you to consider putting something together for this.

The publishers are supplying a massive folder of content for you to download and use creatively in pretty much any way you wish. All the details can be found on the website and the deadline is 1st December. This could be  particularly interesting to our Y1 students who are studying identity and portraiture but also for Y2 who are innovating with technology and considering new audiences. Or even those in Y3 who need to boost their portfolios and develop a career plan. A submission could get you great exposure.

Girlguiding is recruiting a Film and Photography Producer, reporting to the Design Manager, to work within our Communications & PR Directorate.

The Film and Photography Producer will be required to organise, produce or commission photo and video shoots in various locations around the UK that fulfil the requirements of the organisation’s projects, sourcing and briefing freelancers where necessary, liaising with volunteers and parents, completing necessary paperwork regarding venues, ensuring parental sign-off for every girl featured, and preparing contracts and invoices. He or she will also be required to manage the day-to-day development of Girlguiding’s media library, including the sourcing, cataloguing and backing up of video and photographic material as well as act as the organisation’s videographer/photographer when appropriate.

The post holder must have experience in all stages of video production from pre-production, camera work (Canon, Black Magic), audio and video editing to final delivery, as well as interviewing on camera with all age groups and writing and working to scripts. He or she must also have the ability to communicate with people at all levels as well as knowledge of digital photography, photo-editing and photolibraries, and video filming and editing (showreel).

Due to the nature of the work, weekend working will be required, at sites outside of London, for which time off in lieu will be taken.
